Essay-Writing

 



There are many different types of essay, but they are often defined in three categories: Descriptive, Reflective, narrative, and essays.

 


       Essays may be divided into three main classes:-


  • Descriptive:- Descriptive essays test your ability to use language creatively, making striking word choices to convey a memorable picture of what you’re describing. Those which describe some place or things, e.g., (i) countries, towns, mountains, buildings, etc. (such as, Guwahati, the Himalayas) ; (ii) manufactured articles (such as, paper, aeroplanes) ; (iii) animals, plants, minerals, etc. (such as, the cow, the banyan tree, iron) ; (iv) aspects and phenomena of nature (such as, volcanoes, earthquake, flood). The writer must paint a picture through his words. One clever way to do that is to evoke the senses of the reader.


  • Narrative:- A narrative essay is all about expressing various things a writer has gone through in his/her life to make the target audience of readers interested. Writing narrative essays does not require the usage of external sources.  Those which narrate some event, past or present, real or unreal, (such as, the life of a person, a football match or a religious ceremony you have witnessed, a flood, or an earthquake,  a voyage or journey, etc.) The aim when writing narrative essays is to involve the reader in them as if they were right there when it was happening. So make them as vivid and real as possible. 

 

 

Note

     Earthquake, flood, etc., used as general terms, make descriptive essay; but when a particular earthquake or flood, etc. is referred to, the essay is narrative.


  • Reflective:- those which contain the reflection of the author on some topic, generally of an abstract nature, i.e., (i) habits, qualities, etc. (like truth, friendship) ; (ii) social, political or literacy question (like female education, caste system, etc.)

 

 
How to proceed:- 



A) The first step in writing an essay is to be sure that you have clearly understood what the subject means. Suppose you are asked to write an essay on “A football match you have witnessed.” This is quite different from “ The game of football”, and if you write an essay on the latter subject, you will be wrong.

 

B) Then think deeply over the subject and jot down the ideas or point on paper as they occur to you.

 

C) Next arrange these points in groups under suitable headings.

 

D) Now develop the points in the outlines into separate paragraphs. Care must be taken that each paragraph deals with only one point, and that you do not wander off to other points or make repetition.

 

E) The last step is revision. It is essential.

Let us jot down the points that occur in the mind:



 

1. A four-footed animal. 2. Eats grass, oilcakes, and gruel. 3.  Most useful of all animals. 4. The Hindus worship her as a goddess. 5. Hoofs are divided in the middle. 6. Gives us milk on which babies live. 7. Draws the cart and ploughs the field. 8. Very gentle. 9. Has horns. 10. Found all over the worlds. 11. Use of the cow-dung. 12. Use of the horn and skin. 13. Chews the cud. 14. Only one set of teeth in the upper jaw. 15. European and Australian cows are larger than Indian. 16. We should be kind to her and take proper care of her.

 

 

Now arrange the points in groups under different headings:-

 

  • Points 1, 5, 9 and 14 describe the animal.
  • Points 10 and 15 states where she is found and her varieties.
  • Points 2, 8 and 13 states her food and habits.
  • Points 3, 6, 7, 11 and 12 state her usefulness.
  • Points 4 and 16 may from the conclusion.

 

 

 

We have now come to some such bare outlines:-


  1. Description- A four-footed animal; has a pair of horns and only one set of teeth in the upper jaw; hoofs are divided.
  2. Where found and varieties- Found all over the world; European and Australian cows are larger than Indian.
  3. Food and habits- Eats grass, oil cakes and gruel; chews the cud; very gentle.
  4. Usefulness- Gives us milk on which babies live; draws the cart and ploughs the field; use of the horn, the skin and the cow dung; in fact, the  most useful of all animals.
  5. Conclusion- Our duty to her- should be kind to her and take proper care of her. In fact, the Hindus worship her as a goddess.

 

 

 

Develop these outlines and you will get the completed essay.

 

 

Give your essay an interesting and appropriate title. It will help draw the attention of the reader and pique their curiosity.

 

Keep your language simple and crisp. Unnecessary complicated and difficult words break the flow of the sentence.


Before beginning the essay organize your thought and plot a rough draft. This way you can ensure the story will flow and not be an unorganized mess.

 

 

There can be no uniform standard for length: It varies from a whole book to a very brief composition, barely of one page. But for school-students, something between 350 and 400 words will sufficient.

 

The Structure of an Essay:- Every essay has three parts: the Introduction, the Middle and the Conclusion or End.


  • The Introduction:-  The most vital and important content of the essay will be here. This need not be confined to one paragraph. It can extend to two or more paragraphs according to the content. No essay should begin abruptly. The basic goal of an introductory paragraph is to clarify the purpose of essay to the reader. You can give a very brief synopsis of your essay in the introductory paragraph. 

  • A few common ways of beginning an essay are given here:-

 

 1.    With a definition or explanation:

 

Example “Duty is a thing that is due, and must be paid by every man who would avoid present discredit and eventual moral insolvency.”

 


2.    With a quotation:

 

“Breathes there the man, with a soul so dead,

Who never to himself hath said,

This is my own, my native land.”

 

3.    With a story of incident or proverb:

 

“A man may be usually known by the books he read, as well as by the company he keeps; for there is a companionship of books as well as of men.”

 


  • The Middle or Body of the Essay:- This part consists of multiple paragraphs that connect in a logical order. Body paragraphs aim to justify your stance in the essay. The Middle is the most important part of the essay. It contains appropriate facts, arguments, example etc. State the most valuable and impactful point just after the introductory paragraph. Repetitions, unnecessary words and doubtful remarks should be avoided, and due proportions should be maintained among the different points according to their importance.

 

 


  •   The Conclusion:- This is the last paragraph of the essay. Sometimes a conclusion will just mirror the introductory paragraph but make sure the words and syntax are different. A conclusion is also a great place to sum up a story or an argument. A great conclusion should finish with a memorable or impactful sentence that leaves the reader with a strong final impression.

 


No definite rules can be laid down for the conclusion except that it should be natural and short, and not abrupt or forced. A good conclusion may consist of:-

  1. A summary of the ideas contained in the middle.
  2. A natural conclusion drawn from the subject-matter.
  3. A quotation. 
  4. A sentence that strikingly express the main points.
