Origin of Bihu :


The festival I like most is Bihu. Bihu is the national festival of Assam. The Bihu festival is celebrated thrice in the pousha sankranti, Chaitra sankranti and ashvina sankranti. It is the indication of three different stages of agricultural life and the nature alike.


    Nobody can definitely say how and when this Bihu Festival originates. But the most accepted theory is that Bihu originates from the tribal source of hunting and harvesting of agricultural products. The tribal people of Assam termed it in different names such as Bihu, Bi-hau, Bisu, pisu etc. Whatever be its name Bihu is the expression of joy and merriment. The Ahom king celebrated Bihu as royal festival in Assam.



Types of Bihu : 


There are three types of Bihu in Assam, namely -


1.Bahag Bihu or Rongali Bihu, 
2.Kati Bihu or Kongali Bihu and 
3.Magha Bihu  or Bhogali Bihu.





Bohag Bihu :


The Bohag Bihu is known as Rongali Bihu. The Bahag Bihu falls on the last day of the Chaitra month.


     The first day of Bahag Bihu is meant for the cattle. Cattle are bathed and adored. 


     From the second day the Bihu is meant for men. New clothes are worn by the rich and the poor a like. Presentation of Bihuwan is made.People enjoy the Bihu with feasting, merriment, dance and singing Bihu song. 


   Now-a-days Bihu competitions are held on open stages in village and town alike.

Rongali Bihu




The first seven days of Rongali Bihu are called like-


Chot Bihu,
Raati Bihu,
Goru Bihu, 
Manuh Bihu, 
Kutum Bihu,
Mela Bihu, and 
Chera Bihu.



1.Chot Bihu : It is celebrated in an open field, Namghar yard and in an open location. 


    In this Bihu, Bihu songs and danced are performed by the youth and it continues till the night of Uruka. 



2. Raati Bihu : This Bihu begins on the first night of the month chot and continues to Uruka. This was performed  beneath an ancient tree.


       It generally meant for the local women who gathered in that field. Men were used Pepa and an instrument made from Bholuka Baah.



3. Goru Bihu :  This Bihu is mainly related to agriculture. Because the ancient method of livelihood is agriculture. 


  This Bihu is meant for the cattle. Cattle are bathed and adored. 


     While the men taken away the cattle to the river or the pond, they sing Like - 

        

     Dighloti dighal paat, maakhi marru jaat jaat; lau khaa bengena khaa, bosore bosore bardhi jaa, maare xaru baapere xoru toi hobi bor bor goru" 



4. Manuh Bihu : The first day of the Bohag month mark as Manuh Bihu. 


    In this day people bathed with Haldhi , Mah, Aam bota and seeks blessings from elder one and keeps a Gamosa over the shoulder.

        This Gamosa or Bihuwan  is a symbol of our cultural pride. 



5. Kutum Bihu :  The  second day of Bohag Month is celebrated as Kutum Bihu. 


    In this particular day people visited their families, relatives and having a lunch or dinner  with them. 



6. Mela Bihu : The third day of Bohag Month is celebrated as Mela Bihu where cultural event or competitions were held. 

   This tradition of events is continued till all the Bihu functions.



7. Chera Bihu: This Bihu is also known as Bohagi Vidai. 


 People celebrate this Bihu differently but the common motive is to wrapping up the celebration and for the future resolution . It is also marked by exchange of different types of Pithas.







Magh Bihu :


The Magh Bihu is known as Bhogali Bihu. 


   The special feature of Bhogali Bihu is feasting.  This Bihu is mainly related to harvesting and is welcomed with the worship of God of fire. People make meji and haralighar from bamboo, leaves and thatch near the village.

     All the people of the village assembled there and pass the night having  feasting and merriment, and then burn the Meji the next morning. 


       Cock-fight, bullfight and buffalo fight are some of the special games that played in this Bihu. In some other place where the Mejis were burnt, the committee organised different kinds of games for the kids, men, and for the women for their entertainment.

   In this Bihu people of Assam make rice cake with different names like Til Pitha, Sunga Pitha ,Pitha made with Bottle gourd with Gur Mithai, And different types of Laru like Narikol Laru (made with coconut) , Gur Mithai Laru (Made with Tricks Sweet) , Til Laru (made with Sesame seed) etc.




Kati Bihu :


Kati Bihu also called Kongali Bihu. In the Kati Bihu earthen mustard oil  lamps (Aakash Banti)  are lightens at the paddy field to worship and pray to welcome the Goddess of Lakshmi .

  This Bihu also related to agriculture. As we know this Bihu is Kongali Bihu , that means in this time there is not too much to eat in this Bihu. For this whole Kati month people of Assam lighting the lamp in front of the sacred tulsi plant. The Aakash Banti were  lit up high on the tips of tall bamboo. 


    The farmers pray for the good health for their production of crops. The scientific reason behind the lighting of lamps is to fly away the insects from the field and to free from insects.



    Bihu is one of the main features of Assamese cultures. Bihu unites the people forgetting all jealousy, ill feeling and previous misdeeds done to others.
